How to file a Google Play trademark complaint
Google Play’s form is shorter than Apple’s and its reviewers move faster, but they also reject more claims for being vague. Precision about the mark, the package name and the registration is what gets a listing pulled.
Identify the listing precisely
Use the package name (the com.example.app in the Play URL), not just the title. Titles change; package names do not. Give the Play URL as well.
Name the right
Registration number, country, and the classes it covers. Google asks whether your mark is registered in the countries where the app is distributed; be honest about it. A registration in the US does not remove an app from the Indian store on its own.
Describe the confusion
Say what the listing does with your mark: the title, the developer name, the description, the icon. Point at the specific string. "They use our name" is weaker than "the title ‘RoomGPT Pro’ incorporates our registered mark ROOMGPT for the same kind of software".
Attach the capture
A dated screenshot of the listing and of your own listing. If you have a sealed capture with a hash, quote the hash: it tells the reviewer the screenshot is not edited.
The steps, in order
- Contact the developer first — The "Contact developer" email is at the bottom of every Play listing. Google's form asks whether you tried; a short polite request with the prepared notice attached is often enough.
- Open "Report content on Google" — Choose Google Play → Legal reasons → Intellectual property → Trademark → "Report a use of my trademark that is likely to cause confusion". support.google.com
- Fill in the trademark details — Registration number, country of registration and a link to the register entry (TSDR for USPTO). Pending applications are accepted but weigh less.
- List the infringing listing — The Play URL with the package name (id=com.example.app) and a precise description of where the mark appears: title, short description, screenshots.
- Paste the prepared notice into the explanation field — Focus on the likelihood of confusion: identical goods, same store, same search results. Google reads this.
- Sign and submit — The two sworn statements are checkboxes; the typed name is the signature. You receive a case ID by email.
Typical turnaround: Case ID immediately; a decision usually in 1–3 weeks. Repeat offenders are removed faster.
What the form asks for
- Full legal name, company, title, email (may be shared with the developer), address, phone
- Relationship to the trademark owner
- Trademark word, country of registration, registration number
- Link to the trademark record
- URL of each infringing listing
- Explanation of how the use is likely to cause confusion
- Sworn statements and signature
Evidence worth attaching
- Trademark registration certificate or TSDR status page
- Your own Google Play listing with its package name and first-published date
- Screenshot of the infringing listing with capture date
- Play search results for "<mark>" showing both apps
Pitfalls
- Reporting through "Flag as inappropriate" on the listing. That is the policy channel, not the legal one; it goes to a different team and is usually ignored for trademark.
- A description that only says "they use our name". State that the goods are identical and that shoppers searching for the mark get their app.
- Skipping the developer contact. Google asks, and "no" slows the review.
